American Standard Bathtubs

American Standard Bathtub has a long standard of quality and innovation in the standard bathtub industry. This degree of quality has gone into American Standard bath tubs for more than 130 years. There is a lot of history that goes into American Standard bathtubs. The company began as Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company in 1875.

In 1929, the company merged with American Radiator Company to become American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corporation. The company also became the largest global producer of bathroom fittings at the time. The company then became simply American Standard. Today, American standard bathtubs are fundamental to bathroom design.

During the early part of this century American Standard bathtub introduced the built in bathtub to the public. Up until this time a freestanding cast iron bathtub was all that was available. Sometimes a bathtub wound up in the kitchen or another room due to the space required for the bathtub. The built in bathtub alleviated this problem. If your bathroom was small, which was often the case, a built in tub was the perfect solution. This proved American Standard bathtubs as a leader in the bathroom fixture industry. Today, three out of five homes in America, owns an American Standard bathtub. American Standard bathtubs can also be found in hotels and other businesses around the globe.

American Standard Bathtubs perfected the enameling process for cast iron standard bathtubs. Up until 1883, it was difficult to keep cast iron standard bathtubs clean. American Standard Bathtub created an enameling process that produced a completely smooth enameled surface; offering an easier surface to clean versus the rougher, more porous older one. Regular porcelain enamel was mixed with hard quartz to provide the enamel surfacing.

American Standard bathtubs also introduced Americlast. Americlast adheres an alloy to a pre molded bathtub cast. This is then enameled with special enamel made of porcelain and hard quartz. The resulting surface is more durable, easy to clean and slip resistant. Americlast allows for a deeper and roomier bathtub because it is easier to manipulate than cast iron. Americlast is made exclusively by and for American Standard bathtub. An American Standard bathtub continues to make cast iron bathtubs in a few select models, but they are currently being discontinued.
